Mr Verhofstadt, who served as the European Parliament’s Brexit representative, raised eyebrows with his remark, given the Parliament has been in existence since 1952. His tweet related to plans for a conference to discuss the future of Europe, which has been delayed by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The conference’s timetable, or mandate, has not yet been finalised, and Mr Verhofstadt suggested the Parliament was failing in its duty to hold the European Commission and the European Council to account.
He tweeted: “A year and a half into the mandate, the European Parliament hasn’t found its role yet.
“The Flag of European Union as a whole suffers from the resulting lack of direction.
“We need the Conference on the Future of Europe to recalibrate EU politics!”
